Standing Committees  

The Charles County Branch of the NAACP offers a host of volunteer opportunities in the community through our Standing Committees. Below is a brief description of each Standing Committee. To join a committee send an e-mail message to the chairperson.

Legal Redress Committee - M. Janice Wilson, Chair

The Legal Redress Committee is responsible for investigating all reported incidents submitted to the Branch. This committee also supervises all litigation in which the Branch. It is also responsible for informing the National NAACP Office and the Charles County Branch, Unit 7016 informed of the progress of every case. The Legal Redress Committee does not provide legal advice.

You may print a Discrimination Complaint Form Based on: Race, Color, Religion, National Origin, Sex, Age and Handicapped Status. We ask that those who seek our assistance put their complaint in writing, and provide as much information as possible. The form should be mailed to the address below. The Legal Redress Committee will attempt to resolve your complaint where possible, or provide guidance to individuals on how to exercise their right to file administrative actions.

    Membership and Life Membership Committee - Delores Walls,Chair

    The Membership Committee works throughout the year to maintain and increase the membership of the Charles County Branch. It is also responsible for planning and organizing the annual membership campaign; as well as on a continuous basis soliciting new members and securing renewals.

    Freedom Fund Committee - Emiley Henry Johnson, Chair

    The Freedom Fund Committee plans and conducts fund-raising activities, entertainment and other projects, for local and national purposes within the scope of the NAACP's program. Examples of activities include the Martin Luther King Prayer Breakfast, Hall Of Fame Banuqet and yearly "Get Aways," just to name a few.

    Education Committee - Dr. Edith Patterson, Chair

    The Education Committee seeks to eliminate segregation and other discriminatory practices in public education. It studies local educational conditions affecting minority groups, investigates the public school system and school zoning. The committee familiarizes itself with textbook material in the county which is racially derogatory, it seeks to stimulate school attendance, keeps informed of school conditions and strives to correct abuses where found. It is also the responsibility of the committees to investigate the effects of standardized and high stakes testing practices, to include teacher certification, promoting parental involvement in education; as well as aiming to be a center of popular education on the race questions and on the work of the NAACP.

    Political Action Committee - Robina Spruill, Chair

    The Political Action Committee seeks to increase registration and voting; works for the enactment of municipal, state and federal legislation designed to improve the educational, political and economic status of minority groups. The committee also seeks the repeal of racially discriminatory legislation; (works to improve the administration of justice. It is the committee's responsibility to work to secure equal enforcement of the law; and the Charles County Branch informed of all proposed legislation which affects minority groups. The Policital Action Committee is nonpartisan and does not endorse any candidates for public office.

    Youth Works - William M. Braxton, Chair

    The Youth Works develops and coordinates the programs which foster training and developing the skills necessary for leadership and activism. Mobilization, community education, and youth activities are essential focus areas of the Youth Council.

    Religious Affairs - Jesse Hansely, Chair

    Promote education programs designed to give moral and ethical interpretation to the civil rights struggle; interpret the work of the Branch to organize religious groups ; enlist the support of religious groups for membership, equality and full civil rights, and provide resource assistance for religious education and social action activities.
